In response to the current COVID-19 outbreak, Hear Your Song is going virtual. We recognize that hospitals need to greatly reduce their staffs to protect the health of patients and that, as a result, child life and arts therapy services are limited in many hospitals at this time. We also know that there are many kids at home — ill or isolated from loved ones — who are also in need of empowerment and encouragement at this time.

Our goal is to give as many kids (up to age 17) as possible the support to write their own song lyrics and hear them set to music and recorded by professional composers and musicians.

Whether you are a parent, a musician, or an employee at a hospital or other institution that serves children, here is how you can get involved and give kids a chance to have their voices heard and lifted into song:

I AM A PARENT OR FAMILY MEMBER OF A CHILD WHO IS HOSPITALIZED, ILL, OR ISOLATED FROM LOVED ONES. HOW CAN I REQUEST A SONG FOR MY CHILD?

If you would like to request a song for your child, please fill out this Google form. You will have three options.

OPTION ONE (*Recommended*): Collaborate With A Hear Your Song Composer in 5 Easy Steps!

1) You send us some preliminary info — age, interests — about your child!

2) Within 48 hours, we match you with a composer who sends your child a personalized video with tips for writing song lyrics!

3) Your child writes and sends us original song lyrics along with suggestions for what the song should sound like!

4) We send you the composer’s demo recording of the song-in-progress and your child provides feedback!

5) We send you the recording of your child’s song!

OPTION TWO (*Speedy Songwriting!*): Your Child Writes the Words, We Make the Music in 2 Easy Steps!

1) You send us your child’s original song lyrics along with suggestions for what the song should sound like!

2) We send you the recording of your child’s song!

OPTION THREE (*Potpourri!*): Give Us Some Details, We’ll Bring the Song to Life in 2 Easy Steps!

1) You send us either your own song lyrics for a song about your child OR your child’s ideas for what the song could be about OR details about your child’s interests, hobbies, experiences, etc.  PLUS suggestions for what the song should sound like!

2) We send you the recording of your child’s song!

Hear Your Song songs can be about ANYTHING — literally, anything! We’ve recorded songs about family, about Sonic the Hedgehog, about karate, about singing, about slime. Hear Your Song is an opportunity for your child to express themselves however they want to and have their words lifted up in song. Songs can rhyme, but they don’t have to! You can also request any languages, instruments and any genre, style, or mood of music you like! Hear some examples on our Music page.

Hear Your Song songs will ONLY be shared with your family unless you give us explicit permission to share your child’s song more widely. Our hope is that Hear Your Song will bring more awareness to the brilliance and creativity of kids whose voices are seldom heard — we would love to celebrate your child’s song on our public platforms, but we won’t ask you to make that choice until after you’ve heard your song!

Please note that Hear Your Song is neither music therapy nor a replacement for therapy. If you are interested in finding a music therapist in your area, please visit www.musictherapy.org.

I AM A STAFF MEMBER AT A HOSPITAL OR ANOTHER INSTITUTION THAT SERVES CHILDREN. HOW CAN I HELP HEAR YOUR SONG REACH THE KIDS I WORK WITH?

There are a number of ways. First and foremost, hospital staff members can share our website address (www.hearyoursong.org) with families who might be interested. If you would like to post a sign with information in your waiting room or another central area, you can click here to download a printable page.

If staff members remain on site and prefer to facilitate songwriting sessions, they can submit lyrics through the family Google form and provide institutional contact info. We are also eager to work with on-site staff members to facilitate live songwriting video sessions with kids.

If you have other ideas for how we can reach additional children, both in hospitals and at home, please reach out to us at hys@hearyoursong.

I AM INTERESTED IN CREATING MUSIC WITH HEAR YOUR SONG. HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED?

If you are a composer, vocalist, instrumentalist, audio engineer, or music producer, or just want to help out, please fill out this Google form
